FROM THE HISTORY OF THE UKRAINIAN NATIONAL TCHAIKOVSKY ACADEMY OF MUSIC

Pursuant to the resolution of the Conference of the labor team of UNTAM (December 26, 2022), an official request was sent to the State Archive of Kyiv with a request to provide information on the existence of documents in the archive’s funds that testify to the fact that the Kyiv State Conservatory was named after the outstanding composer Petro Tchaikovsky.
According to the results of the application, the Academy received a reply confirming that the historical reference of the fund No. R-810 contains information that the Presidium of the Verkhovna Rada of the Ukrainian SSR signed the Decree “On the Perpetuation of the Memory of Petro Tchaikovsky” on May 9, 1940 and the assignment Kyiv State Conservatory named after Petro Tchaikovsky.
On the occasion of the historical event, a number of public and cultural and artistic events were held in Kyiv, namely:
– the Republican Jubilee Committee for the celebration of the 100th anniversary of the birth of Petro Tchaikovsky which included: the director of the Kyiv Conservatory A. Lufer, B. Lyatoshynskyi, K. Mykhaylov, P. Kozytskyi and A. Olhovskyi;
– on May 7, 1940, an anniversary concert was held at the Taras Shevchenko Kyiv State Theater of Opera and Ballet;
– on May 8 and 9, 1940, a scientific conference was held at the conservatory.
Taking into account the significance of the event and its place in the historical and artistic space of the national culture, speeches were made by the head of the jubilee committee professor A. Lufer, the head of the department of history of music of the conservatory professor A. Olhovskyi, L. Revutskyi and professor A. Gozenpud.
Leading creative teams took part in the final concert, including the United Symphony Orchestra under the direction of N. Rakhlin, the Symphony Orchestra of the Ukrainian Radio Committee under the direction of M. Kanershtein, the Honored Choir Chapel “Dumka” under the direction of M. Verikyvskyi, the People’s Artist of O. Petrusenko , Honored Artist O. Ropska, Honored Artist M. Hryshko and others.
Researching the history of Petro Tchaikovsky National Academy of Music, it is worth emphasizing that the assignment to the Petro Tchaikovsky Kyiv State Conservatory was carried out precisely by the Decree of the Presidium of the Verkhovna Rada of the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic, and not by the Presidium of the USSR, as stated in some sources.
In accordance with the Law of Ukraine “On Legal Succession of Ukraine” (News of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine (VVR), 1991, N 46, Article 617), the Decree of the Presidium of the Verkhovna Rada of the Ukrainian SSR dated May 9, 1940 does not contradict the laws of Ukraine, is valid and is not subject to cancellation by the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine (it can be recognized by the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine only as having lost its validity in compliance with the procedure defined by legislation).
This is an indisputable fact of the position of the Ukrainian government and the expression of Ukrainian will in terms of the cultural and artistic heritage of Ukraine, its originality and identity, as well as an important page of the Ukrainian National Tchaikovsky Academy of Music of its creative and educational heritage.
